Hi,
I’m so glad there is an arachnophobia club! Really, I’m so happy they’re other people like me, some of my friends are afraid of spiders but not as much as I am. (Excuse my English by the way, I’m french so it may not be perfect). It’s important for me to talk about it because I think about spiders everyday, I’m obsessed by them.
Q. 1
When did you first notice your fear of spiders?
When I was a child I didn’t care about spiders, my aunt even made me touch spider webs to prevent me from being an arachnophobic and it worked…until I was about 10.
Q.2
Do you have any idea of what caused this fear?
(This story is a bit embrassing) When I was about 10, I was sitting on the toilet and… I noticed that there was a dead spider hanging on my bottom (a little one but with long thin legs), I was so scared and shocked! I think it was the first time a spider scared me and then I became obsessed by them. What I hate the most about spiders is their legs (maybe because this spider had long legs),
Q.3
On a ranking of 1 to 5, with 5 be max, how does you fear rank?
I would say 5! I can’t hardly touch a picture of a spider. I remember, once there was a huge spider in the car, my mother was driving and couldn’t stop, the spier was on the window (inside), it was near me and it bagan moving (you know when you think it’s going to fall but doesn’t), I started screaming and crying, I was completely paniced! I started scratching and struggling my aunt (who was before me), I just needed to scratch something, I wanted to climb the sit and go away from the spider. I wasn’t thinking anymore, I would have jump out of the car I think if the spider would have started walking towards me, fortunately my mother stoped the car (which was dangerous but she had no choice). When a spider is too near, I really can’t contrl myself I start crying and I would do anything to go away.
Q.4
In what general part of the world do you live (state, province, country)?
I live in France. Fortunately we don’t have many big spiders.
Q.5
Is your fear hereditary? As in, do any of your family members share this fear?
Not at all, they all are ok with spiders, my mother wouldn’t touche a huge spider but many people can’t and it dosn’t mean that they are arachnophobic, she can easily kill or touch an “average” spider by the way.
Q.6
How does this fear affect your live?
Everytime I enter a house/apartment/room/hallway etc…I look around me, on the roof and in the corners to be sure there’s no spider. I also check before going to bed. I can’t stand even a small spider and I really feel bad when they start moving, I just hate the way they move, run or the movments they make while building their webs. I will never sleep if there’s a spider in my bedroom, I will go to the living room or ask my mother to kill it (I often waked her up in the middle of the night) or spend the whole night watching it. Everytime someone stop talking or stare at something I jump and think”oh my god! A spider!!!”. When I was younger I often made the same nightmare with giant spiders, I don’t have this drea anymore but I still have nightmares about them, I never touched a spider in my dream, it’s just too much emotions so I wake up.
Q.7
What is your preffered method of killing or getting rid of a spider (besides having someone else do it)?
Killing a spider? No way! Too risky! But ok let’s pretend that I can’t ask anyone else, I would use some sort of insecticide (is it the same word in English?), that’s my favourite way of killing it: no need to go too near. If I have none, I try anything (parfume, shampoo etc…all of these work very well). I also have 3 big frogs, they only eat at night, so if I see a spider at night I just use my frog
